The iconic St Ignatius is a dream for couples-to-be and wedding photographers alike. This Richmond landmark which has the capacity to seat 2000 of your guests, is perhaps one of the most sought after venues in Melbourne for traditional Catholic ceremonies. At Serendipity we admire the striking architecture of the church, which serves as an inspiring and elegant backdrop for wedding day photography. Couples choose St Ignatius for many reasons, not the least because of its size, prominence, beautiful gothic design, proud history within the Richmond and Melbourne Catholic community. With this appealing list of pros: family ties, historic significance, and sheer beauty, it is no wonder St Ignatius is considered a queen of churches!
St Ignatius was built in 1867 according to architect William Wardell's French Gothic style design. When the spire was completed in 1928, it was the tallest structure in Australia, soaring to 215 feet! During the ceremony light shines atmospherically from the clerestory windows above the sanctury, transept and nave, bathing the bride in luminosity. Although in the middle of your wedding your will probably not look closely at the beautiful stained glass windows that are responsible for much of the atmosphere at St Ignatius, they are worth appreciating for their details and particular significance as well as their beauty.
At Serendipity Photography we love St Ignatius' spacious interior and the way the afternoon light falls through the stained glass windows. Retaining a reputation as one of Melbourne's grandest churches, this classically beautiful and architecturally striking building is the perfect setting for truly unforgettable ceremonies.
